Expectations for Mr. Hernandez’s Geometry Math class
Requirements:
A notebook of your choice – I recommend a 3 ring binder.
Graph paper – you will need it throughout the year.
Pens and pencils – you will need both at various times
A Compass (the circle making kind, not the magnetic lost in the woods kind) – If you have your own you can practice at home.
A Protractor – Again so you can practice at home when necessary.
A scientific calculator – be sure you know how to use it (Casio fx-300ES is my favorite)
Textbook – New York Geometry
Recommendations:
Pocket folders – for keeping handouts, tests, quizzes, and homework.
Index cards – for making flash cards and studying facts and formulae.
Graphing calculator – the TI-83/84+ is the one I am most familiar with.
Expectations: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe
Be on time. Your lateness is a distraction to the entire class and me. If you are late, have a pass when you arrive.
Attendance is the single most influential factor in a student’s success in a class. You cannot learn if you are not here.
Be ready to come up and use the ActivBoard. Geometry deals with shapes and diagrams and using the board will help you better understand them.
Your notebook will be your best study guide. Therefore your notes, of which I give a lot, should be neat, complete, and organized.
All work should be neat, organized, have your name, date, and assignment. Torn papers and jagged edges look like garbage to me and will be treated as such.
Each student will be an active participant in the classroom. I appreciate raised hands but I will feel free to call on anyone. Class participation will make up 10% of your grade. Illegal lateness will detract from your participation grade.
Asking questions is just as important as answering them so do not be shy or hesitant about stopping me for clarification.
You will be respectful of me, of each other, and of each other’s property, as well as the property of the school.
Homework is given because mathematics is mastered and becomes easier only by doing daily practice. Therefore, I assign homework almost every class. It may be checked in class or collected. Homework will make up 30% of your grade.
Quizzes will be given on a regular basis and tests will come at the end of major units. Tests and quizzes will make up 60% of your grade.
There will be a mid-term in January and the Geometry Regents in June.
All school policies will be in effect at all times. Keep your hats and coats in your locker and I-pods and cell phones out of sight and sound.
Please do not interrupt me in the middle of class to ask for a pass to the bathroom. Wait for an appropriate break in the action.
My job is to do everything I can to make sure you succeed. Please let me know if there is anything you need to make sure our goals are achieved.
